In 1996, I, Maurice A Hillebrandt, was reading a booklet, ‘Visitor’s Guide to the Normandy Landing Beaches’ and discovered that although there were more than a hundred memorials to groups and individuals etc, of the allied forces which took part in the invasion of Normandy, there was not one to commemorate the Royal Navy and Royal Marines crews of the Landing Vessels involved in the landings.
